The Dia Chronicles Book Two
by Tammy Farrell

Genre: Adult Historical Fantasy
Release Date: January 28th, 2015

The descendants of the ancient gods think they’ve found peace, but the time has come when new magic and ancient powers will collide…

Stripped of his Dia powers and left to rot, Malcolm is a prisoner of Valenia—a sentence he finds worse than death. His thoughts of revenge are the only thing keeping him sane, but when he finally manages to escape, Malcolm discovers that living as a mortal is more dangerous than he ever imagined. After stealing from the wrong man, Malcolm becomes a captive once more, only this time his punishment is one that he won’t soon forget. His only hope of survival is Seren, an enigmatic young girl with golden eyes and a malevolence to match his own.

When he’s led to Mara and Corbin, the two responsible for his fall from grace, their new faction of Dia is in chaos, infiltrated by an ancient power thought to have been banished forever. This only fuels Malcolm’s ruthless ambitions, but he soon realizes that he too is under attack, a pawn in a centuries old game of power and greed. As new battle lines are drawn, Malcolm finds himself in uncharted waters, forced to choose between helping those he’s vowed to destroy or give in to his lingering desire to settle the score.

Debts will be paid, lives will be lost, and no Dia will ever be the same.

By the time the smell of smoke and roasting meat finally reached Malcolm, and his hole in the ground was completely black, he knew the time was drawing near. The sound of laughter and flutes from above stoked the fires of determination within him, while the repetitive drumbeat counted down the minutes.
His mind wandered as he stared sullenly at the walls of black earth. He clutched his mangled hand to his chest, far too weary for anger. He was humiliated. Over and over again he’d been disgraced, robbed, laughed at. The hardest truth to face was that there still might be more degradation to come. He had wanted everything and succeeded at nothing. Hope was now but a whisper in the past, still carried on the winds, but too distant to hear.
Malcolm pressed his head against the soft earth. He had nothing left to lose and nothing left to love. Even his own mother had become an unseen shadow, abandoning him in his time of need. She was useless to him, as she always had been, and he vowed that if she ever showed herself to him again, he would speak any word that might pierce a mother’s soul.

Book Birthday: Killing Darkness!

So… I sort of am having a HUGE day today… Trying to take it all in.

Let’s rewind a bit…

If you were given the choice between Heaven or Hell, it would be an easy decision correct?

What if choosing Heaven made you selfish, but choosing Hell meant you were living up to your destiny and staying loyal and true to your family? Suddenly the choice isn’t so easy now is it?

That’s the decision my main character must make in my novel, Killing Darkness. And guess what?

After two years of conception and six more years of drafting, writing, revising and editing…

It released… TODAY!

So… after years and years of work… how do I feel?

Relieved. Excited. Shocked. Terrified.

You know… the usual.

This is the fourth work that I’ve hit the publish button on, but my first “epic” novel. Killing is 424 pages and over 50 chapters long. It truly was a journey to write, and I’m hoping it will be an enjoyable read.

A book this intricate and lengthy requires a team of amazing people, and I had them. My editor Kara Leigh Miller is fantastic! She points out how to make my books stronger, how to make my characters shine and how to really pull on the heartstrings of readers. We’ve laughed over this book, and even had some teary moments over certain scenes. She is an AMAZING editor and I am so lucky to have her in my corner, as not only a fellow writer but a great friend. She has shown me how to add dimension to my characters, and knows my work so well she’s the first to call me out when a character is acting… well… out of character!  I know I’m a better writer because of her guidance. Not to mention she’s read this huge book many, many times by now, and hasn’t run away screaming. Kara, you are the best. Love you girl! ❤

One thing a writer always dreams about is their cover. We don’t just dream– we agonize over it. Will it be pretty and make you want to pick it up? Will readers fall in love with the imagery and think…I must have it? Killing Darkness weaves mythology, and morals in a modern setting. It has supernatural creatures socializing with mortals and deals with love, death, and choices. How could one cover express all that? It wouldn’t be found in stock photos. It needed someone special who would understand. When I contacted S.P. McConnell last February to talk about the Taming Darkness cover, my hope was that he would do the entire trilogy. I loved the first cover. It had innocence, and seduction all in one image. I could feel the movement of her hair and it felt like I was there– watching. I knew Sean would create a great cover for Killing Darkness. But he didn’t create a great cover. He gave me a MASTERPIECE. Have you seen it? Look! Look! ( I suggest clicking on the image to see all the amazing details!)

Killing Darkness Cover Digital 4

S.P. didn’t just give me the cover and walk away. When it had “technical difficulty” he worked into the wee hours of the night making sure it was exactly what I had envisioned. I’m so lucky not only to have him as my cover artist, but also to call him a friend. Cheers!!

So are you ready for the blurb?

Powerful, beautiful, and covered in scars…

Brielle, born of a mortal-immortal union between a human mother and the devil Himself, is prophesied to be the one capable of turning the tide in the brewing apocalypse.

As Brielle’s thirtieth birthday draws near, she strikes a deal with the devil and sets out on a journey of self discovery. In an attempt to comprehend what it means to be fully human, Brielle finds herself at the door of her therapist, Adam. Blurring relationship lines and questioning everything, she quickly learns that humanity, vulnerability, and love are things she isn’t prepared to handle. Distancing herself, she finds shelter in her father’s arms once more.

Two worlds are about to collide…

When the archangel Michael suddenly takes a deep interest in Brielle, Lucifer begins to understand that his greatest opponent is curious about more than just her choice. Michael’s fall will be Lucifer’s rise and only Brielle holds the key to making it happen.

With a human, an angel, and a demon all tearing at her heart, Brielle realizes it’s time to decide if her loyalties lie with Michael in Heaven or her father in Hell.

What do you think? Ready to head to Amazon?

Here’s the link!

And just a note about the book. Although it is called Book 2 of The Darkness saga, Killing Darkness CAN be read as a stand alone book. But, I suggest grabbing a copy of Taming Darkness to better understand Lucifer’s choices in book 2. Taming is on sale for a limited time for only 99cents!

The eBook for Killing went live today. The print will be available VERY, VERY SOON!

xoxo ❤

Thanks for all your support. Readers are the reason I write!

Happy Book Birthday: Taming Darkness

As you all know, I wrote a little trilogy about the devil and guess what? Book one, Taming Darkness, releases today! I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am to finally have my baby out into the world.  I have been living with these characters for many moons and I am so happy that you can finally meet them. As a special treat, guess who is here today… that’s right, you met him a week ago, The Dark Haired Man from Barbara Garren’s book, Phasms Infinite Potential. Care to guess who he brought along? If your answer was the devil, then you are correct!

Here for a rare appearance, Lucas Starr, answers some questions and gives us his thoughts on public image, war and that one woman who got into his head.

Interview With The Devil: Taming Darkness by Kat Daemon

I agreed to meet Lucas at his penthouse apartment on New York’s Upper East Side. I wasn’t disturbed or suspicious about his request of venue. He’s a business man, with pressing demands on his time and resources and the request made imminently more sense than asking him to traipse over to my location. Not that I have a location, shifting between alternate planes of reality and all.

But I digress. I was introduced to Lucas by an industrious young acquaintance who, while not necessarily currying favor with either of us, would certainly benefit from the details of our conversation. Poor thing, she neglected to first ask the price of our cooperation.

Having set the meet for this particular evening, I arrived to find an exceedingly large number of beautiful men and women exiting the apartment. Lucas met me at the door, waived me in and proffered a drink. I had to refuse, as it was difficult for me to maintain my corporeal form as well as imbibe. The main room was large, with a massive fireplace and black, granite bar. A balcony overlooked the city, affording a spectacular view of Central Park, and one entire wall displayed a quaint collection of swords, knifes, armor and other such items.

We settled into a pair of comfortably heavy oak chairs, detailed with gothic carvings of gargoyles, imps and such. The place was charming beyond words and Lucas was an attentive host and subject.

DHM: So, Lucas – you seem quite the gentleman. Articulate, erudite, with excellent taste. And yet, you have such a horrible public image. All those horns , fangs, pitchforks and a tail. Why do you believe the public with this campaign of vilification?

Lucas: I think we can both agree that people fear that which they do not understand. Ignorance stirs the imagination, folklore gets interwoven with truth and the facts seem too far fetched to be believed. They want to hate me and condemn me, because I had the courage to carve my own path. They paint me as being uncivilized because accepting me as civil makes me too much like them. Imagine how hard it would be to look in the mirror and see me staring back. (Not that they’d protest, I am beyond beautiful.) Then who would they point a finger at? Creating a monster has given them a false sense of security.  They don’t even need me. They are their own demons.

DHM: Wouldnt it be easier to utilize your prowess and slant public perception in a more positive light? I mean, look what Ghostbusters did for that heinous lot of puerile, amateur exorcists

Lucas: I’m a business man, not a politician, although I know more than my fair share. I’m not about to run a campaign persuading the public to adore me. I do my dealings in the dark, and I want my clients to come to me of their own free will. The world has become one big carnival of bandwagons, and I am not handing out horns and a lifetime membership to those willing to fight for my cause. My time will come, and if nothing else, I am extremely patient.

DHM: So, man to man here what WAS it about this particular human female; Maria, that made you so, well, whipped? Surely, in the length of time youve existed, youve come across truly exquisite females who didnt require such sacrifice. The challenge wasnt all that, was it? Werent you really looking for a way to tangle with Michael and prove you were the better, uh, Angel?

Lucas: Like all my conquests, it began as a game. A beautiful, twisted game to pass the time. When you’ve seen as much as I have, nothing phases you anymore. Every action is propelled by the need to amuse yourself. Sacrifice is a word that I don’t feel is part of my vocabulary. I carry out decisions in ways that I feel are in the best interest to me. With Maria, it was no different. When I looked at her, I saw myself shining back in her eyes. You can call it reckless narcissism if you’d like. Perhaps my judgement was jaded by her, dare I say it? Light. Either way, as you said earlier, I have excellent taste. As for Michael, there is no question that I am the superior being. We have “tangled” many times, it’s a healthy way for me to release my pent up anger and eternal frustration with the monotony of this crumbling rock I have come to accept as home.

DHM: How about something a bit more plebian, for the masses if you will: If you could change any one thing in your past, any single decision or outcome from your millennia of existence, what would it be and why? Other than the whole cast down from Heavenbit, of course.

Lucas: (laughs) I don’t regret the rebellion. I did what I had to do. I made my choice and Michael made his. The outcome was rather unfortunate, but that’s just one battle of the great war. Trust me, that story is not over. If I could go back to any moment, I think I wouldn’t have waited so long to tempt that famous carpenter. I went after him when he was in his thirties, and lets face it, in ancient times that was the equivalent of  retirement age. It’s not as much fun to bully the elderly. I didn’t really have my heart in in it either. I should have gone after him when he was a teenager. Teens are so much more persuasive. What can I say? You live, you learn.

DHM: Anything you wished your adoring fans and minions knew about you? Any last words, heh, heh?

Lucas: I think it’s time we put away such tedious labels as good and evil. I did what I had to do to survive, and unlike my former brethren, I have the ability to evolve. So I think at the end of the day, the people must ask themselves who would they rather have by their side? An army of angels that can’t break away from the old regime, or a figure who can introduce them to the possibility of a brighter tomorrow? After all, I am always willing to make a deal.

Happy Book Birthday! Phasms Vol. 1: Infinite Potential by Barbara Garren

You guys, I have been waiting since I first met Barbara back in August to be able to say these words:

HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY!! That’s right! It’s here! It’s finally here! This blog post is packed with a special interview, awesome links and giveaways!! Read on my friends… read on!

Phasms Vol. 1: Infinite Potential is available today! I was lucky enough to get to read this book early on and it is FANTASTIC!

THAT’S NOT ALL!  I have a rare treat for you.

See, Barbara and I have been working on a SUPER SECRET PROJECT that I can finally reveal now… deep breaths…

Are you ready for this?

The mysterious Dark Haired Man from Phasms has agreed to do an interview with the devil himself, Lucas Starr, the main character from my upcoming book, Taming Darkness. So not only do you get to meet two of our characters, but you get to meet them at the same time!

So without further ado… I turn things over to Lucas:

Interview for Phasms Vol. I: Infinite Potential, by Barbara Garren

The Dark-Haired Man is interviewed by Lucas Starr (of the upcoming “Taming Darkness”)

Wrapping myself up in a veil of black smoke I left the comfort of my lair. The party was in full force, the burning fireplace, the flowing liquor and the scandalous women, but I have an important engagement. I am on my way to meet someone who has intrigued me for some time now. He is known as The Dark-Haired Man, and he is a force to be reckoned with.

Appearing on the beach, his beach, to be exact, I take in a breath and feel the salty air enter my body. The beach is empty, and I make my way to the shore, pulling a lit cigarette from mid air and taking my first sweet drag. Out of the corner of my eye I see a shadow approaching. He is walking toward me with strong, determined steps. His face is serene, his eyes dark and determined. I knew in that moment, we would get along.

I offer him a cigarette, but he only moves his head slightly in a no, his eyes locked on mine. Gesturing to the rock formation that stretched it’s hand out into the ocean, we took our seats. The jetties are sharp and hard, but it doesn’t bother us. It’s time to get down to business, I need to find out more about this Dark-Haired Man.

LUCAS: So, you are a Phasm. Ive been around longer than time existed and this is new information, even for someone as well cultured as myself. What are the advantages for being such a being, and where do you get your power from?

DHM: Ah, I see you are as direct and, pardon the pun, pointed as ever. May I answer your last question first? Yes? Thank you – Phasms are older than mankind, older, my dear friend, than you. We are beings formed of emotion itself – the emotions of man, in God’s image, of course. That is where we draw our power and that is what makes our power limitless. As man feels, man gifts us with the ability to feel. As man hates, or loves, the strongest of those emotions feed to us a surfeit of power. Man can no more control his simple, reactive nature than he can pull the tide from the sea, thus it is left to us, to the Phasms to rein in the impulses they eschew and utilize them for our own good. As to the benefit, surely you can appreciate the ability to draw power from a source of such Infinite Potential?

LUCAS: Describe yourself to our readers. We know you as, The Dark-Haired Man.But theres so much more. How do you feel about being known as this mysterious man, and what would you like us to know that we may not know?

DHM: We all wear many guises, do we not? We choose the form, the likeness and the garb that suits our purpose, as I chose to appear in this form. I fear I’m the least mysterious of my kind, having chosen to reveal myself to others here, on this plane of existence. Not to bore you with braggadocio, but I am the first of my kind to develop such abilities. It takes a great deal of power to appear as I do in this time and place. Would you not agree this reflects a consummate level of skill? As to what I’d like you to know that you may not, I believe it’s that I too am susceptible to deep, moving emotions. I love, I laugh and I live, as few before me have. I harvest from a wellspring of deep feeling, and seek only to share the richness of those feelings with the one I love. So you see, in reality, I’m quite kind and generous, extremely affectionate and most respectful of the emotions of others.

LUCAS: Why the beach? You could meet her anywhere. –I know of some excellent private lounges if you are interested– Here, the sand, the seaweed, the desolation? What is it about this place that makes it the meeting spot for you and Kelsi?

DHM: (Lets out a low laugh and gestures around him) Ah, yes, the beach. Think of it – the endless cycling of sand and sea, the inevitable pull of gravity’s tides. The beach has such symbolism, such strength and power. And yet, the stark desolation often found here, the solitude and relativity of such a massive entity as the ocean mirror nicely the same traits of my kind, of the emotions that give rise to our existence and to the ever changing nature of our being. It’s also a rather nice analogy for the fruitless pursuit of man to harness that same power. And Kelsi rather likes it here. Such a shame she doesn’t see the parallels – she’s really rather hard to impress at times.

LUCAS: Lets talk about Kelsi for a minute. You have some power over her –Nicely done, by the way– You have managed to weave your way into her thoughts, and dreams at a time of her life where she was the most vulnerable.  Some would perceive this seduction to be cruel, how do you respond to that?

DHM: I am beside myself with sorrow over Kelsi’s unresolved needs and I wholeheartedly disavow such nonsense! How can it be cruel to give what one needs in order to move past such torrid, tragic loss? How can it be cruel to deny one’s self one’s deepest feelings? Are not all true emotions a balance of two strong states of mind? Is not love only truly felt when it is balanced by loathing? Is not joy only experienced against the reflection of despair? I seek only what is best for Kelsi – true illumination of the multitude of emotions. Poor thing, she never had a chance to understand this facet of existence before I met her.

LUCAS: Without giving too much away, Im going to ask a difficult question. There are rumors that Kelsi brought you to her. Could you exist physically without Kelsi, and just how far are you willing to go to obtain her?

DHM: Ah, how shall I reply? Truly you ask a significant question. Let me say only that Kelsi completes me, as I complete her. We are two halves of a whole and we can no more exist without another as the tides can exist without the pull of the moon. Yes, I’ve lived (pardon the expression) long before Kelsi was born, but did I truly live before I gathered her grief unto myself? Can I truly go on living without drawing from the exquisite panoply and depth of emotion that girl wields inside herself? Can any of us, of any species, truly give up the one thing that completes us and ensures we exist with the fullest meaning of the word? Can we? Can you? I think not. I will give up all the power I have gathered to bind myself to that sweet, tender girl. All of it, for a temporal life of true sensation and feeling. Though in reality, time has little or no meaning to my kind (laughs).
